Works of Mercy by Frank J Casella

When I look at this picture, the reddish Fall leaves in the trees with snowy branches, I can not help but think about the mercy of God. How most trees lose their leaves by the time it snows, these trees (which I think are classic Burr Oak) seem to keep their leaves. How many times do we hold on to, or carry, things in our lives that only mercy can provide an answer or closure?

You may see mercy in a different way with this picture, but, what this all brings me to think about is the Catholic Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. The Spiritual Works of Mercy have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians and spiritual writers throughout history.

The corporal Works of Mercy are:

To feed the hungry;
To give drink to the thirsty;
To clothe the naked;
To harbour the harbourless;
To visit the sick;
To ransom the captive;
To bury the dead.

The spiritual works of mercy are:

To instruct the ignorant;
To counsel the doubtful;
To admonish sinners;
To bear wrongs patiently;
To forgive offences willingly;
To comfort the afflicted;
To pray for the living and the dead.

Most of all, this takes Prayer in Times of Seeking God's Will.

Thanks for reading, have an enjoyable day.
Frank
