The Solitude of Silence

One key element to much of my art photographs is in listening to the silence. I learned this from a friend of mine who challenged me to spend one hour a day, for sixty days, in the solitude of silence.

Solitude: Time alone with your own thoughts and free from input from other minds.

I thought it would be like when I go to Holy Adoration for an hour each a few times a month, however, I couldn't last fifteen minutes in my first hour of silence. By the end of the sixty days it was very reveling to me how much more I had clarity of mind, at peace, and seemed more happy.

What happens during this process is that all of us have this noise in our heads, both from all the interactions we have with other people and things in our daily lives, as well as the information overload we take in. In fact, after the first couple weeks of doing this process you will notice how much the noise suppresses our own thoughts deep inside .. the things God may be saying to us but we never hear.

Many people I share this process with say how they spend five or ten minutes a day in silence, because they don't have that kind of time. Others, you can tell, are afraid of the silence. But one thing I have learned from the silence is that you come to learn God's voice.

It's like finding the beauty of flowers in the middle of the wooded preserve, just like the picture above, the things that I once worried about and struggled with are no longer a weight on my shoulders.

I no longer see the things through my camera that I once did, rather, I see new things always seen but never noticed.
