Monday, October 10th is Columbus Day, which is a state and federal holiday.

The holiday started in 1792 as an Italian-American heritage celebration in New York.

The day was declared a federal holiday in 1937 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

As an Italian-American, I've always enjoyed the Chicago Columbus Day Parade, and the bread and Italian food samples tossed to the crowd.

As a Catholic, the day usually started off with Mass and the Knights of Columbus, I remember doing all this with my dad, then to go work the parade.

Later in life I did this as part of my work with Cardinal Bernardin, also an Italian. Cardinal George followed wth the tradition.

There are some great Italian organizations who do wonderful charity work, such as organizing food baskets to the working poor for Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday's.

So, I hope you have the day off, but if not please remember in your thoughts and prayers the many people with great acts of kindness because of Christopher Columbus and the symbolism of what this day represents.

Enjoy your day!
